Dodgers draft relative of Giants heartbreaker

The Dodgers used their fifth-round pick to draft Oklahoma catcher J.T. Wise, the Big 12’s Player of the Year. Wise just so happens to be the great nephew of Yankees great Bobby Richardson.

Here in San Francisco, where the World Series trophy case remains empty, Richardson is known for robbing the Giants with his catch of Willie McCovey’s line drive to end Game 7 of the 1962 World Series.

Could Wise one day take aim at McCovey Cove as a Dodger? This season, the Johnny Bench Award finalist hit .359 and threw out more than half of potential base stealers.

It was only two years ago when Wise, a transfer from powerhouse LSU, lost his scholarship after slumping as a sophomore infielder. Wise got cut by LSU even after reportedly offering to take less scholarship money.

Now after starring at Oklahoma, he’s got some bonus money coming to him.
