Milton Bradley’s mom takes swings at Cubs

Charlena Rector tells the Long Beach Press-Telegram:

“Apparently, he talked about all the negativity surrounding the team - and that included the fans. Well, he was only telling the truth. Why should he be suspended for telling the truth?

“He told me, `You can feel the hatred in this city.’ Every time Milton has made an out with the Cubs this season he gets booed. He’s had a lot of terrible things said to him when he’s been out there in the outfield at Wrigley Field. This season has been a nightmare for him.”

“I think there’s still freedom of speech in this country,” she says. “It’s like they’re blaming Milton for what has happened to the Cubs this season. He hasn’t been the one doing the pitching. And there are other players who have also struggled with the bat. But everyone seems to want to blame Milton.”

“I don’t worry about Milton too much because I know he’s a blessed child,” she says. “God will take of him.”

She also spoke to the Chicago Tribune:

“There is more behind the scenes that bothered Milton and made him uncomfortable in Chicago,” she said.

Pressed, Rector wouldn’t give details to verify her claims. She only offered that it involved Bradley’s 3-year-old son facing racial slurs at about the same time Bradley was complaining about what he considered a racist element of Cubs fans.

“Milton called me,” Rector said, “and said, ‘It’s bad enough what I am going through, but I can take it and go to the ballpark and pray games don’t last any more than nine innings. But my son?’ “
